Healthy Baby After a Very Slow Start? UPDATE: MISDIAGNOSED

Postby fabi42 » Thu Jul 19, 2007 1:22 am

Hello,

I was told a few weeks ago to expect my second miscarriage this year. I had bleeding and extremely low and slow rising HCG levels (180 - 19 dpo, 232 - 22 dpo, 322 - 24 dpo, then suddenly 2,159 - 31 dpo).

When it jumped the last time, they brought me in for an ultrasound and the yolk sack measured 5-1/2 weeks when I should have been almost 7 weeks--about a 11 days behind. Two and a half weeks later, we saw a heartbeat and fetal pole that measured 8w 4d--catching up, now within the 5 day margin or error. Last week, I had an ultrasound that showed 10 weeks, right on schedule.

I'm just wondering, has anyone else experienced this kind of scary slow growth, and was the baby OK? I'm thrilled that things have apparently turned around, but I'm just worried that, although things look to have caught up, something is wrong with the baby. I think about it all the time and my doctor has sort of skirted the issue, avoiding giving either reassurance or discouragement.

If you've had a similar experience (preferably resulting in a healthy, happy, 10-fingered, 10-toed baby), please, please let me know.

Thank you,
Molly

Hi Molly!
Im in a similar situation but all looks good! Not enough research has been done on early ultrasound! Fact is not all babies grow the same, also if you have a tilted uterus that can throw things off! I would not worry! Im going to have that ultrasound scan with the blood test next week to be sure my beansprout is ok, i dont have insurance, its gonna cost me, but better to be safe than sorry! I did not even know i could get preggo, i am almost 37 have had 5 csections, i have 1 ovary, and im breastfeeding a now 10 month old! So this was a shock! When are you due? Im due feb 14~ Let me know how all turns out, but i think that we are both going to have happy healthy little ones!
Good luck :)O<

Congratulations on your great surprise! Does this make 6!?!?

Have you had your test yet? I have a bad HMO [Kaiser], and the nurse practitioner who did the u/s told me I didn't need that test in spite of what's been going on, because I'm under 35 [I'm 31]. But I think I am going to call back and demand one. This will be my first, had a miscarriage earlier this year.

My due date when they thought my dates were off was 2/14, too, but now I think it is 2/3. Keep in touch, let me know how your test went.

Hi Molly

This is such great news!

I know from personal experience that u/s can be very inaccurate early on. And there are a number of women who post here that had slow rising hcg early on and have had healthy babies.

I wish you (and sunshine surprises) all the best with the rest of your pg.

Big hugs :)O Clare

slow start

Postby hunee » Sat Aug 18, 2007 2:44 pm

Hi! When I was pregnant with my son my first sonogram showed him to be 6weeks when I was positively 8 weeks pregnant. I was told to come back in 2 weeks to make sure he was growing. The second sono showed that he had grown a lot but still didn't measure 10 weeks. I never had my HcG tested or anything. Anyway after the second sono my pregnancy went very smooth.I had two more sonograms during my pregnancy that were normal, one at 13 weeks and one at 20 weeks. I did not have any other testing done. I was 33 years old. He was born at 42 weeks a very healthy 9lb. baby. He is now a very healthy 4 year old.

Now my situation is similar to yours. I recently had a sonogram at what I know was 7 weeks preg. and the sac meas. 5 weeks with nothing visible inside. My Hcg went from 3,284 to 3,611 in 2 days. One week later the sono showed a 6week 2 day baby. I have to go back again next week for another sono to make sure the baby is still growing and has a healthy heartbeat. So let me know how everything goes with you.

Almost 20 Weeks and Looking Good!

Postby fabi42 » Wed Sep 12, 2007 6:44 pm

I just wanted to give an update. I had my 20 week ultrasound today and the baby looks perfect--he has all his digits, his spine and head look great, and he's pretty obviously a boy. He's measuring right down to the day, 19 weeks 3 days, too, so no more slow growing for this one!

Thank you for all of your kind words and thoughts and well wishes, I know they made all the difference.

I'm in a waiting game right now. Have had two transvaginal u/s. Slow h/b present at both u.s.. Baby grew from 5 weeks to 6 1/2 weeks within a span of a week. Suppose to be at 7 weeks based on the size of my sac. 8 weeks based on the first day of my last period. These posts have given me some hope that maybe things will turn around. Did they give you the exact beats per min. early on? Heart rate is measuring at 77bmp

I am so glad I found this website. I have been desperately searching for some information since our OB visit yesterday and i finally found this website this morning.

It is comforting to see that others are going through the same thing that I am but I also send my thoughts and prayers to all of you because the waiting is just torchure.

My LMP was 8/10 and yesterday I should have been 7.6 days. The u/s showed the baby measuring at 6/6 with a good heartbeat. Dr. said there's better than a 50% chance that I will not make it through the 1st trimester. I had a u/s on 9/18 a and it showed a gestational sac measuring 5/4 days. So somewhere in the last 2 weeks, the baby lost a week of growth.

Does anyone think there is any hope for this baby? If we go back next week and theres a week's worth of growth and a heartbeat...it should be positive but my OB said then we would need to be concerned with chromosomal abnormalities!

There is so much to think about and WAIT, WAIT, WAIT!!

If anyone has any feedback or similar stories, I would love to hear.

Jen - Mother of 2.

hoping for a miracle baby

Postby californiacooks » Thu Oct 04, 2007 3:18 pm

I am a 30 yr old mother of 3 and we had decided in May that we wanted another one. So I had my IUD removed on May 15. We are always so busy and really do not have time to make babies so it took a while for me to get pregnant. I last ovulated on August 13, with my last period on July 26. The docs want to go by my last period, but I know when I ovulated so I am going by that day when I know we conceived. The docs always want to add 2 weeks on to the pregnancy so really if you think about it my baby is only actually 7 weeks and 3 days right now, but they say almost 10 weeks.
My first ultrasound was on September 21st and the baby was measuring 7 weeks but no heartbeat (transvaginal ultrasound). My doc said she wanted a second opinion but not to get my hopes up, she said there was a slim chance to see a heartbeat at my next appointment. I went in for 2nd us also transvaginal on Sept 27 and still no heartbeat. So of course I was just so upset and hurt.
I talked to my doctor that day and she gave me a choice of doind a D&C or waiting it out. At first I wanted a D&C because I did not want to carry a baby that was not a live anymore. But then I changed my mind because I did not want to go through a D&C when I was not 100% sure. Now I am waiting for another ultrasound on Wed Oct 10 to see if there is a heartbeat or any change. I told my doctor about my Aug 13 conception so I am hoping that when they were trying before it was just to early. Anyone going through this?
Also no miscarriage symptoms, no bleeding, no cramping and I still feel kind of pregnant...

Fabi, I'm so glad you gave an update and all is well. That is terrific!

Jen, so many babies look behind during the first trimester. This is so common despite what the doctor may say. If you have a tilted uterus, it is more uncommon to have the dates right on during the first trimester! Hang in there.

California, hang in there. They diagnosed you too early. You should have had an ultrasound a week out to verify whether there was a heartbeat or not. Sometimes the baby is just too small to see it yet (or, with a tilted uterus, it is harder to visualize).

(((hugs)))

Update

Postby fondi4 » Tue Oct 09, 2007 5:59 pm

Hi -

I wanted to give an update. We had our u/s this week and the baby measured perfectly at 8w4d with a heartbeat of 166!! I can't believe that last week the OB told us we had greater than a 50% chance that we wouldn't get through the 1st trimester. He said he mustn't have measured the fetus properly during the u/s last week . Can you believe that? My husband and I spent the entire week with on pins and needles agonizing over the OB visit. All for nothing...

Anyway, he told us that we are on track for a normal, healthy pregnancy.

Thanks to all of your support during this very difficult time. This website is a blessing.

Jen

Jen, great news. Although, many, many women measure behind during the first trimester. We really don't think measuring behind is a big deal here at all. I immensely dislike the fact that so many doctors scare women needlessly.

Congrats though and, please keep us updated.
