6-7 weeks empty gestational sac: It WAS a blighted ovum :(

6-7 weeks empty gestational sac: It WAS a blighted ovum :(

Postby Dancer » Fri Jun 21, 2013 4:57 am

I had a 1st transvag. scan at 4-5w where only a small black dot could be spotted and went in again at 6-7w (due to irregular cycle not certain how far I am along). At the 2nd scan only an empty gestational sac measuring 6x14mm could be seen with no yolk sac or fetal pole. My obgyn diagnosed "missed abortion" and told me to call him if I didn't pass the miscarriage in 2 weeks for a D&C. I was devastated, but thankfully there's the internet where everyone can do their own research these days, so I read so much about misdiagnoses incl. this forum, especially in early pregnancy. I also have a tilted uterus which adds to the chances of a misdiagnosis!
This encouraged me and I have made another appointment with a different obgyn next week. I am very angry at my first obgyn who dismissed me with that shattering diagnose without any further tests, and it makes me even more angry to read how many other women got pushed to do a D&C although there may have been a chance that the baby was still alive! :()
Please cross your fingers for me! Hugs! :(O

Praying for you! It is just too early to diagnose still. Sure, this could end in miscarriage but too early to know yet. Hang in there and, please, keep us updated!

Praying for you. So frustrating. Keep holding out hope and don't let anyone force you into anything you are not ready for. It's your body and your pregnancy with your little your little one.

Thank you for all your prayers. I had another US yesterday and it still showed an empty sac, which has grown to 14x18mm though. The hcg blood test showed 30221, which would be about in line with a normal 5-7 weeks pregnancy. I will have another blood test tomorrow. The obgyn told me to come back in 10 days. He doesn't give it a great chance, if until then nothing can be seen he would call it a definite miscarriage. He is suspecting a blighted ovum. I'm not giving up yet. I may try a specialist prenatal diagnostics clinic that has 3D/4D scans. After what I read on this and other sites and friends telling me stories of so many misdiagnosed cases I still have hope. Thank you all for contributing to this site. It gives hope to many women and can prevent pregnancies being ended before it's warranted.

I had another scan today with a 3rd doctor.
Unfortunately it's still the same. Sac is now 12×22mm. Nothing can be seen inside, just a big black hole.
My hCG values went from 30221 to 34308 in 48h last week, they said it's not enough for a viable pregnancy. The doc today was very final, he said the fetus won't grow and I have to just accept it.
My heart is sinking and I'm losing hope. According to my own calcs I should be 8+w now, by which time even most of the misdiagnosed cases have found a baby and heartbeat. I'm scared of the miscarriage to not start for a long time, it's already been 2w since the first diagnosis. I'm also scared of the pain and blood that will come with it. But I still think it is the best option to wait it out? What do you think?
I'm going for a final scan in 3 days... if still the same I think it's definite.

My heart goes out for you.. its exactly what I am going through. Today is my final scan with my OBGYN. After giving up TTC, this was spontaneous and I just couldn't believe it. Just like you, they didn't see anything on the first one and something small on the second one... since this was at the RE office, I am giving one more chance at my OBGYN. Another 30 min and I will know for sure. Hang in there!

I don't want to give false hope, but don't let the HCG numbers discourage you. My HCG actually dropped in 48 hours, and a week later we found a heartbeat! I was only about 7 weeks, then, so the heartbeat was found a little sooner, but don't give up hope! I've read stories on here about it not being found until 9 - 10 weeks. Could you have ovulated later? You might just be off on weeks too.

Thank you for your encouragements. I'll have a final scan this Fri. By then I should be almost 9w. I did read the stories where a baby suddenly appeared after 9 or 10w, but I'm also realistic that these cases are very rare. I tested positive with a HPT on 3 Jun by which time I must have been 4w from LMP for sure, so my dates not likely off by much. Plus I tend to have shorter cycles of 24-25 days.
I don't know how to decide if Fri still shows an empty sac.

So I went in today at 9 weeks and still just an empty sac :*(
What would you do in my situation? I'm scared to wait for the natural m/c as I heard complications are more likely to occur at later stages beyond 9-10 weeks. A lot of blood and pain, I'm not good with both :(
Any advice and support very much appreciated! :(O

I'm so sorry you are going through this right now. If you are nervous about a natural miscarriage, then I would opt for the D&C. I would make sure you talk to your doctor about any and all concerns you have. Lots of hugs headed your way.

Re: 6-7 weeks empty gestational sac: It WAS a blighted ovum

Postby Dancer » Wed Jul 10, 2013 12:49 am

So things didn't turn out well for me :*(
I had my D&C yesterday at 9w4d, but the good news is that all went perfect and I only have minor pain and almost no bleeding so far.
After my hCG levels dropped and a final scan before the procedure showed a shrinking empty sac, things were more than clear to us all. I feel I have done everything possible, I consulted 3 different obgyns, 1 doula and had 3 bloodtests and 6 scans in total. I just couldn't stand the nerve-wrecking wait any longer, so the D&C has given me closure. It was really quick and painless, I was put to sleep for 45mins and when I woke up I felt no pain at all, in fact, my arm where the anaesthesist pumped in the fluid hurts more than my abdomen! Despite my retroverted uterus which has a higher risk of perforation everything went without complications. I am not even taking pain meds any longer less than 24h after the surgery, and the bleeding has almost stopped, it's only very light spotting now, like the very last day of a period.
This is all very sad but after the D&C, I am ready to move on and try again.
Despite a negative outcome, this forum has helped me so much to get through this. So thanks for all your great stories, your kind words and encouragements. Hugs to you all :(O

I am so sorry for your loss. I am going through the same thing, no encouraging signs from any clinical aspect at all. Gonna wait until my scheduled f/u appointment in 2 weeks (which means I should be around 9 weeks by then) before deciding on a procedure. If things don't happen naturally by then :(
I just posted my story because I also have found so much hope in this site. No matter what the final outcome, it helps to not feel alone. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Take care

I don't know if you still would even look at this post but my heart is hurting. Your story sounds just like mine. I had 2 sonos at my ob, he pushed d&c and i decided to transfer. As of today, I saw a new doctor and, I should be 9 weeks, still showed an empty sac in which the sac is only measuring 6w4d. My hcg about a week ago resulted 50,900. Today I had another blood draw and tomorrow I see a high risk doctor for my last sono. It is looking like d&c next week, though I don't wanna give up hope..but I have to stop praying so hard because now my faith in general has been tested. This is my 3rd pregnancy. One in which was absolutely unplanned. I had to settle the thought of a 3rd and so unexpected to begin with..then I thought: meant to be? Now look... :*(
