I conceived via IUI (intrauterine insemination) in July. In early August, I went to my fertility specialist for one of my last appointments with them, since I had already tested positive for being pg, I only had one more appointment with them. At that appointment, I had been having pain on my right abdomen. They did an ultrasound and that point I was 5 weeks pg. They noticed a 4 cm cyst on my right ovary, they said they were unable to tell if the baby was developing normally, since I had just turned 5 weeks, It was way too early to even see anything. They said the point of doing an ultrasound at such an early time would be to see if there was anything else that would possibly cause me pain. My fertility doc was convinced that it was my cyst that was painful and not to worry cause the cyst should be close to being gone in a few weeks. He did however contact my OB to set up an ultrasound with them one week later because the baby should be able to be seen by then. One week later, I went to that appointment and filled in my OB, that I knew I had a cyst on my right ovary but this u/s was to see my baby and make sure everything was ok. After 5-10 min of staring into a big black circle, she said well, that's the gestational sac but there is no sign of your baby. Come back next week and we'll give it another try. She was saying this like she was at a bar ordering her favorite drink. I was laying there repeating over and over, "What do you mean, there is no sign of my baby look harder!" I'm sorry, she said, you'll have to come back next week. That week was the longest in my and my husbands life. I was crying daily, looked up empty gestational sac on the internet and found virtually nothing good. Read about blighted ovum and was convinced that is what had happened. My husband all the while telling me that everything was fine and that he felt 100% sure the doctor made a mistake. Well, the next week, when I went back for my next u/s, the doctor mentioned, about an hour after I left that she realized the black empty sac that she thought was my gestational sac was actually my CYST! COULDN'T SHE HAVE CALLED ME?!? Five minutes later my husband and I were staring at our little baby with a strong heartbeat. 10 weeks later leads me to where I am today, 15 weeks pg, heard my baby's heartbeat last Dr's appointment, and Oh, yeah, have a brand new OB that I LOVE!!!!! Moral of my story Dr's aren't anywhere near perfect!!!
