So confused! Please help!

So confused! Please help!

Hi, I need help! I am 98% sure I've miscarried, but have lingering doubts due to some odd ultrasound results. I wonder if anyone else has been through this. Here's my story:

The first day of my last cycle was 11-25-09. I took a HPT on 12-21-09 (day after missed period) and it was positive. On Sunday 1-31-10, I started spotting brown. It continued until the next morning when I noticed some very minute clotting, so I went ahead and called my ob who got me in that day, Monday, and did an u/s. The u/s showed a closed cervix, tilted uterus, and an embryo that measured 2.9 mm and 5 wks 6 days (should have been 9 weeks 5 days), and no heartbeat. They indicated that I am most likely having a miscarriage and to come back at my regularly scheduled appointment on 2-11 to follow up.

Well, on Tuesday the bleeding and clotting got a little worse with the start of some cramping and the blood beginning to turn from brown to red. On Wednesday, I woke up with fairly painful cramping, lower back pain, and the bleeding and clotting increased and was now bright red. I went back to the ob and they did a second ultrasound. The embryo was still in place, my cervix was still closed, and it had GROWN. On Monday it was 2.9 mm and on Wednesday it was 3.3 mm. Yet, I'm beginning to show signs of m/c.

So, early Wednesday night, I started to get some intense cramping. I took the Lortab the ob gave me in the event that that occurred, but it was useless. All night, I was awake with what I assume were contraction-like pains (this is my first pregnancy). Eventually, I fell asleep and in the morning I woke up, without pain, and passed a clot that was a little larger than an egg. Since then, I've had no cramping, but have continued to bleed, although that slowed significantly to where I am now just spotting a little. It continues to be bright red.

The ob doesn't want to see me again until 2-11 because the embryo had grown those two days. She wants to allow ample time, if it continues to grow, to do so and to develop a detectable heartbeat.

So, I'm so confused right now. I feel that I've had a miscarriage, but don't know why it would have shown growth while I was experiencing the onset of symptoms, particularly since it was about 4 weeks smaller than it should have been. Please, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, or experiences to share, I would love to hear them.

Thank you!

I am really sorry you are going through this difficult time. The baby would not have grown if it was not viable at that point. However, sometimes they do stop growing and miscarriage can occur. Your doctor is doing the right thing by waiting. We have had women who have had what they thought were completel miscarriage go on to still be pregnant. Of course, others have miscarried so time is the only true test.

I know what an awful time this wait can be. You are in my prayers.

For any future readers desperately seeking answers and experiences online, a new u/s showed definite miscarriage with some tissue left behind. So, I go for a d&c tomorrow. Alot of firsts for me this year, first pregnancy, first miscarriage, first surgery...what joy. I do feel relieved finally knowing what happened and that I can finally pull it together and move on.

I'm so grateful to this website just for existing and having available so many different experiences to learn from.

Thanks again!

Do you know how common it is to miscarry naturally with some tissue left behind? I am waiting to m/c on my own but a little nervous now.

I am sorry for your loss. I know how it feels. If I m/c this time, this would be my 2nd one. And I haven't had any children yet.
Thank you Father that every good and perfect gift comes from you.

(((hugs))) I pray your D&C goes smoothly. Keep in mind, a lot of women start doing too much, too soon after the D&C. As a result, they bleed heavier and for a longer time with more cramping. Please, take whatever time you can to rest.

and, in response to dinhmylinh, women should have an ultrasound after a miscarriage to make certain nothing is left behind.

Thank you, Kay. I know I will take a couple of days off work after the procedure and plan to take more if need be. Although I hope not.

To dinhmylinh, I honestly have no idea. I had an ultrasound to confirm my loss and it was seen then. Good luck to you! I wish you the best and that all goes well! Hang in there!
