Retinol during pregnancy - oops!

Postby momof3 » Wed Jul 23, 2008 4:28 pm

I am 8 weeks pregnant and just found out the face cream I have been using contains Retinol. I know its oral form can cause birth defects, but I was wondering if anyone knows if the topical form is harmful. I have discontinued use, but am still worried. Thanks!

I've been using Differin (Rx Retinol) since the beginning. I didn't think much of it, but when I offhandedly mentioned to my dermatologist that I was pregnant, she told me to ask my OB if I could keep using the Differin. I asked him a few weeks ago, and he didn't seem concerned about the fact that I'd been using it, but he suggested that I stop using it now, "just to be safe." The amount that you actually absorb is so tiny, it probably will do no harm at all, and that's with prescription strength stuff.

So do discontinue using the face cream, but I would say not to worry one bit about what you've used so far. Mention it to your OB at your next visit; he or she will probably put your mind at ease about it.

Congrats by the way, and good luck!
