Healthy Baby After a Very Slow Start? UPDATE: MISDIAGNOSED

Postby fabi42 » Wed Jul 18, 2007 9:22 pm

Hello,

I was told a few weeks ago to expect my second miscarriage this year. I had bleeding and extremely low and slow rising HCG levels (180 - 19 dpo, 232 - 22 dpo, 322 - 24 dpo, then suddenly 2,159 - 31 dpo).

When it jumped the last time, they brought me in for an ultrasound and the yolk sack measured 5-1/2 weeks when I should have been almost 7 weeks--about a 11 days behind. Two and a half weeks later, we saw a heartbeat and fetal pole that measured 8w 4d--catching up, now within the 5 day margin or error. Last week, I had an ultrasound that showed 10 weeks, right on schedule.

I'm just wondering, has anyone else experienced this kind of scary slow growth, and was the baby OK? I'm thrilled that things have apparently turned around, but I'm just worried that, although things look to have caught up, something is wrong with the baby. I think about it all the time and my doctor has sort of skirted the issue, avoiding giving either reassurance or discouragement.

If you've had a similar experience (preferably resulting in a healthy, happy, 10-fingered, 10-toed baby), please, please let me know.

Thank you,
Molly

Hi Molly!
Im in a similar situation but all looks good! Not enough research has been done on early ultrasound! Fact is not all babies grow the same, also if you have a tilted uterus that can throw things off! I would not worry! Im going to have that ultrasound scan with the blood test next week to be sure my beansprout is ok, i dont have insurance, its gonna cost me, but better to be safe than sorry! I did not even know i could get preggo, i am almost 37 have had 5 csections, i have 1 ovary, and im breastfeeding a now 10 month old! So this was a shock! When are you due? Im due feb 14~ Let me know how all turns out, but i think that we are both going to have happy healthy little ones!
Good luck :)O<

Congratulations on your great surprise! Does this make 6!?!?

Have you had your test yet? I have a bad HMO [Kaiser], and the nurse practitioner who did the u/s told me I didn't need that test in spite of what's been going on, because I'm under 35 [I'm 31]. But I think I am going to call back and demand one. This will be my first, had a miscarriage earlier this year.

My due date when they thought my dates were off was 2/14, too, but now I think it is 2/3. Keep in touch, let me know how your test went.

Hi Molly

This is such great news!

I know from personal experience that u/s can be very inaccurate early on. And there are a number of women who post here that had slow rising hcg early on and have had healthy babies.

I wish you (and sunshine surprises) all the best with the rest of your pg.

Big hugs :)O Clare

slow start

Postby hunee » Sat Aug 18, 2007 10:44 am

Hi! When I was pregnant with my son my first sonogram showed him to be 6weeks when I was positively 8 weeks pregnant. I was told to come back in 2 weeks to make sure he was growing. The second sono showed that he had grown a lot but still didn't measure 10 weeks. I never had my HcG tested or anything. Anyway after the second sono my pregnancy went very smooth.I had two more sonograms during my pregnancy that were normal, one at 13 weeks and one at 20 weeks. I did not have any other testing done. I was 33 years old. He was born at 42 weeks a very healthy 9lb. baby. He is now a very healthy 4 year old.

Now my situation is similar to yours. I recently had a sonogram at what I know was 7 weeks preg. and the sac meas. 5 weeks with nothing visible inside. My Hcg went from 3,284 to 3,611 in 2 days. One week later the sono showed a 6week 2 day baby. I have to go back again next week for another sono to make sure the baby is still growing and has a healthy heartbeat. So let me know how everything goes with you.

Almost 20 Weeks and Looking Good!

Postby fabi42 » Wed Sep 12, 2007 2:44 pm

I just wanted to give an update. I had my 20 week ultrasound today and the baby looks perfect--he has all his digits, his spine and head look great, and he's pretty obviously a boy. He's measuring right down to the day, 19 weeks 3 days, too, so no more slow growing for this one!

Thank you for all of your kind words and thoughts and well wishes, I know they made all the difference.

I'm in a waiting game right now. Have had two transvaginal u/s. Slow h/b present at both u.s.. Baby grew from 5 weeks to 6 1/2 weeks within a span of a week. Suppose to be at 7 weeks based on the size of my sac. 8 weeks based on the first day of my last period. These posts have given me some hope that maybe things will turn around. Did they give you the exact beats per min. early on? Heart rate is measuring at 77bmp

I am so glad I found this website. I have been desperately searching for some information since our OB visit yesterday and i finally found this website this morning.

It is comforting to see that others are going through the same thing that I am but I also send my thoughts and prayers to all of you because the waiting is just torchure.

My LMP was 8/10 and yesterday I should have been 7.6 days. The u/s showed the baby measuring at 6/6 with a good heartbeat. Dr. said there's better than a 50% chance that I will not make it through the 1st trimester. I had a u/s on 9/18 a and it showed a gestational sac measuring 5/4 days. So somewhere in the last 2 weeks, the baby lost a week of growth.

Does anyone think there is any hope for this baby? If we go back next week and theres a week's worth of growth and a heartbeat...it should be positive but my OB said then we would need to be concerned with chromosomal abnormalities!

There is so much to think about and WAIT, WAIT, WAIT!!

If anyone has any feedback or similar stories, I would love to hear.

Jen - Mother of 2.

hoping for a miracle baby

Postby californiacooks » Thu Oct 04, 2007 11:18 am

I am a 30 yr old mother of 3 and we had decided in May that we wanted another one. So I had my IUD removed on May 15. We are always so busy and really do not have time to make babies so it took a while for me to get pregnant. I last ovulated on August 13, with my last period on July 26. The docs want to go by my last period, but I know when I ovulated so I am going by that day when I know we conceived. The docs always want to add 2 weeks on to the pregnancy so really if you think about it my baby is only actually 7 weeks and 3 days right now, but they say almost 10 weeks.
My first ultrasound was on September 21st and the baby was measuring 7 weeks but no heartbeat (transvaginal ultrasound). My doc said she wanted a second opinion but not to get my hopes up, she said there was a slim chance to see a heartbeat at my next appointment. I went in for 2nd us also transvaginal on Sept 27 and still no heartbeat. So of course I was just so upset and hurt.
I talked to my doctor that day and she gave me a choice of doind a D&C or waiting it out. At first I wanted a D&C because I did not want to carry a baby that was not a live anymore. But then I changed my mind because I did not want to go through a D&C when I was not 100% sure. Now I am waiting for another ultrasound on Wed Oct 10 to see if there is a heartbeat or any change. I told my doctor about my Aug 13 conception so I am hoping that when they were trying before it was just to early. Anyone going through this?
Also no miscarriage symptoms, no bleeding, no cramping and I still feel kind of pregnant...

Fabi, I'm so glad you gave an update and all is well. That is terrific!

Jen, so many babies look behind during the first trimester. This is so common despite what the doctor may say. If you have a tilted uterus, it is more uncommon to have the dates right on during the first trimester! Hang in there.

California, hang in there. They diagnosed you too early. You should have had an ultrasound a week out to verify whether there was a heartbeat or not. Sometimes the baby is just too small to see it yet (or, with a tilted uterus, it is harder to visualize).

(((hugs)))

Update

Postby fondi4 » Tue Oct 09, 2007 1:59 pm

Hi -

I wanted to give an update. We had our u/s this week and the baby measured perfectly at 8w4d with a heartbeat of 166!! I can't believe that last week the OB told us we had greater than a 50% chance that we wouldn't get through the 1st trimester. He said he mustn't have measured the fetus properly during the u/s last week . Can you believe that? My husband and I spent the entire week with on pins and needles agonizing over the OB visit. All for nothing...

Anyway, he told us that we are on track for a normal, healthy pregnancy.

Thanks to all of your support during this very difficult time. This website is a blessing.

Jen, great news. Although, many, many women measure behind during the first trimester. We really don't think measuring behind is a big deal here at all. I immensely dislike the fact that so many doctors scare women needlessly.

Congrats though and, please keep us updated.

Didn't make it

Postby californiacooks » Wed Oct 10, 2007 8:46 pm

I KNOW THIS IS THE TOPIC FOR HEALTHY BABY AFTER A SLOW START, BUT I WANTED TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT I WENT TO THE DOCTOR TODAY AND IT WAS NOT WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR. THERE IS STILL NO CHANGE AFTER 3 WEEKS, NO HEARTBEAT AND THE BABY IS STILL THE SAME SIZE AS 3 WEEKS AGO, SO WE HAVE LOST HER. BUT I KNOW THIS IS GOD'S WILL AND AS I MAY NOT UNDERSTAND WHY I HAVE TO BELIEVE IN GOD AND KNOW THAT THERE IS A REASON FOR THIS LOSS. I WANTED TO THANK EVERYONE OUT THERE WHO HAS PRAYED FOR ME AND I WILL PRAY FOR ALL OF YOU AS WELL. CONGRATS TO THE WOMEN WHO HAVE MADE IT THROUGH THE SCARY TIMES.
I HAVE TO GO IN FOR SURGERY NEXT WEEK... :(

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND GIVE ALL OF YOU THE MIRACLES YOU ARE HOPING FOR.

This is the worst week...the waiting

Postby sallie0710 » Wed Aug 20, 2008 12:58 pm

Hi, I'm 37, had two wonderful healthy baby girls, 2005 & 2007 Ellie was on the first try, Sarah Mason was on her daddy's return from Iraq. Had an IUD put in for the second return from Iraq. Timing was right this summer so I had the IUD removed in early June and LMP was June 21. Didn't get my period so went for a blood test after two failed HPT a week earlier. Positive results! YEA! However, went for first vag u/s Monday, August 18 and no heartbeat, measuring 6w1d when I should have been 8w2d. As I have read almost every post on here, I am amazed at how many people get that EXACT reading when they are told to go home and wait for miscarriage...Had blood taken for baseline Hcg levels and second draw today. Numbers were 25, 858 and less than 48 hours later 26,767. NP says I am not out of the woods yet, but have another u/s on Monday. She wants another blood draw on Friday to compare #'s again but says that sometimes it spikes a bit before the body catches on. I've had no bleeding, spotting, cramping and still have some symptoms of pregnancy. NP said good sak and placenta, just no heartbeat... This site has given me hope and sanity over the past 48 hours. I also couldn't help but notice that those with similiar situations had boys...any pattern to that theory that anyone else sees? I have no known history of a tilted uterus. My God is an awesome God and we are praising Him daily. For all we know He's answered our prayers for a healthy baby and if this one wasn't going to be healthy, He is allowing us this now rather than later. Thanks for letting me join this sisterhood.

Just read your post and I am in almost the same situtation. I went to the doctor on Monday also, and same deal. Sac but no baby. I had an US a week and a half earlier and the sac had grown since then. I should have been 7 weeks give or take a few days (couldn't remember my last period). The midwife already suggested a D&C, but after reading all the stories on this site my husband and I decided to wait and give this baby a chance to show us he's just hiding out for a while. Also like you I haven't had any cramps or bleeding and still "feel" pregnant. I never had any early US with my other 4 children, in fact never went to the doctor til I was into my second trimester. My hcG levels only went from 31,771 on Monday to 32,700 on Wednesday, but I read that you can peak as early as 7 weeks, so maybe that isn't such a bad sign. I will pray for both of us. My midwife was very understanding yesterday when I told her we were going to be optimistic and wait and see what happens. She scheduled another US for next Wednesday, so in the mean time I am just going to continue to do all the right things and pray a lot. Let me know how things go for you.

Dear Fabi, i am so happy that i found your post as i am going through the same situation and finally i found a hope. i have slow raising HCG, only 30% up after 48 hours and i was put on progesteron and now i will wait another week before going to see again the HCG levels. 1st was 230 and 2nd after 48 hours was 305. Is it very bad?

Hello ladies,

Here is my story:

I had a chemical miscarriage and started bleeding on 3/1. Went to the doctor and had a negative hcg the next day. I went to Florida with my husband 2 weeks later for a vacation. We did not try to get pregnant, but did not try not to either. I found out on 3/26 that I was very early pregnant again. I had some spotting that occurred April 9th. They did an ultrasound and saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac and said I was 5 weeks pregnant. There was no reason for the spotting seen and I was told to be optimistic. My hcg came back at 2065 and my progesterone was 20. I was told to be optimistic and come back one week later. I went back on April 15th for another scan. This time they saw the gestational sac and yolk sac again, but no embryo or heartbeat. I was very upset and they decided to draw an hcg again to see if my levels were doubling and to do an ultraound again in one week. I was called by the doctor the next day who told me that my hcg had only increased to 4800 in 6 days. She was very concerned at this point. She said the fact that my ultrasound did not show progression and my hcg levels were not doubling was very ominous. She said I was most likely having a miscarriage. I asked her how many times she had seen a viable pregnancy occur after this and she said she could count those times on her hand. She suggested that now that I was having a second miscarriage I needed to see a fertility specialist and was considered to have recurrent pregnancy loss. She told me though that we needed to do one more ultrasound in one week to make sure I was having a miscarriage. I was devastated. I cried for days. I did see a fertility specialist to help me decide if I should do a D&C to get chromosomal analysis. Over the weekend I developed spotting and thought this was my miscarriage starting.

I went in yesterday for my ultrasound. I felt very sad sitting there in the waiting room thinking of the conversations that we were about to have. We went in and they started the ultrasound on my abdomen - they saw something, was that a flicker??? Yes, it was a heartbeat! They switched to transvaginal and saw I had an embryo now and a heartbeat of 110 bpm. They said I am measuring more like 6 weeks and not 7 weeks.

I saw my doctor afterwards and she said she was shocked. She said that she cannot explain what happened. She said we should be cautiously optimistic at this point as we were measusing 1 week behind and the heart rate was just "adequate". She said the heart rate was just at the lower limit of normal. She suggested we do another ultrasound in 2 weeks to see what happens. I am now on pins and needles for two weeks wondering what the heck is going to happen. I have been reading this website and seeing this can happen and it looks like 50% of the time the baby survives. Anyone with some advice? I feel like my life is a rollercoaster now. I would appreciate any input
