Msov2's Story - High hCGs and No Baby Seen

Postby msov2 » Thu Jun 23, 2016 8:16 pm

In December of 2014, after 10 years of trying, I experienced a missed miscarriage after conceiving naturally. Had a D&C after confirming through bloodwork what was seen on ultrasound. In May of 2015, I conceived once again. Due to my history, my doctor began blood draws immediately and scheduled me for an ultrasound at 6 weeks. At the ultrasound appointment the tech told us she could only see a gestational sac and yolk sac, but that it was probably just too early. However, when I saw the doctor, he was much more grim. My hcg level was at 54,000. He informed me that we should have seen something definite on ultrasound by 10-15,000. He told me that he believed I was miscarrying again and wanted to refer me to a fertility specialist. However, he scheduled a repeat ultrasound for the following week. That week was the most agonizing week ever. I honestly can't put into words the grief I felt. We returned the following week for the ultrasound. Almost immediately after beginning the ultrasound, the tech turned the screen around as she said, "there's baby, and there's the heartbeat!" The doctor's response was "That's a bet I would have lost. It's a good thing I'm not a betting man!" That baby girl is now 5 months old and sleeping soundly as I type this. I thank God that He has the final say and that doctors are not always right.

I am so glad you took time to share your story. It will help so many women. Even after we know that some babies just stay well hidden until hCG numbers are really high, misdiagnoses are still occurring. Each and every story helps to give comfort during an especially worrisome time. Thank you for that.

Congratulations on your little gal :)

If you are being diagnosed with a blighted ovum after IVF, please take a look at this article I put together: Misdiagnosed Miscarriage After IVF
and why I just believe a blighted ovum should NOT be diagnosed before nine weeks at the earliest and the UK's new guidelines support this
