Decreasing hCG....told definate miscarriage ~ MISDIAGNOSED

Postby HollyC » Sun Apr 18, 2010 5:39 pm

My nightmare started almost 2 weeks ago. At almost 9 weeks I asked my doctor if he would listen for babys heart beat (I know in Canada it is standard pratice to wait till 12-14wks) he agreed and my heart sank when he couldn't find it but he stated that it was no big deal as baby is still very small at this point and hard to find. He sent me for 2 HGC tests and stated that they were for peice of mind, the first one came back and he said levels looked good, on the low side of normal but good nontheless. The second set came back and they had decreased by about 200 he said it was a little concerning and that I needed to go and get anouther one done those ones came back on Friday (and I am now 10 and 1/2 weeks) he said that they had lowered again (about 600 in total now) and that it ment that baby was gone and I was going to miscarry. He wants to wait a week to send me for a U/S so he can see what my body will do. I have not had any spotting at all, nor have I had any cramping. I am confused and scared....Is my doctor right am I just waiting for a miscarriage or could he be wrong???? Please if you have any help it would be wonderful.

Were your levels 600 or had they dropped by 600? If they were only 600 and you are certain of your dates, those numbers are just too low. However, anytime after about eight weeks, your levels are supposed to taper off and then begin to decline.

This may very well be a miscarriage but I'm glad you are having that next ultrasound to be certain.

No my levels started out at 61752 and are now at 61168 so roughly 600 in total. My Dr. actually called me today and we are doing the ultra sound tomorrow. Thank goodness because its the not knowing that is killing me.

That is not a big drop at all. I'll be watching for your ultrasound update!

Yay! Everything was normal. They really should not have scared you. So, did the doctor at least apologize for telling you you'd miscarry? You may want to consider a new doctor. I'm sure he's done this before quite a bit and will continue to do so.

My doctor only said that sometimes the blood tests can "lie" no "sorry" or anything. :( I also work for a Dr. tho and allbeit he is a Ophthalmologist he yelled at my Dr. for me and told him that he had a horible bed side manner (I work in the same building as my OBGYN) so that made me feel a bit better. I have since asked to be refered to a new OBGYN.

Thank you all so very much for posting your story's it gave me so much hope and comfort to know that I wasn't alone!

Good for your boss! Give him a big hug for me and, if not comfortable with that, how about a high five? :)

Mistakes happen with blood tests but yours were NORMAL. That's what drives me nuts here.
