Just found out today I was MISDIAGNOSED!!!!!!!

Hi,

I think I am posting this in the wrong area. Can't figure out how to start a new post. Sorry! :)

Anywhooooooooooo. Last week I went for my first ultrasound at 6 weeks. The doctor said he could only see a gestational sac and nothing else. He said it didn't look good, but he would draw some blood and check my HCG numbers and call me the next day.

When he called he said my numbers were 14,000 which confirmed his diagnosis of a blighted ovum. He said he DEFINITELY should have seen something with those numbers. I asked him if there was ANY chance that he was wrong or that maybe the baby was hiding. He said, "no way. seriously." He asked if I wanted a D&C and I said no I wanted it to happen naturally and he said to call him if I started to bleed profusely or was in a lot of pain. He didn't want to do any follow-up at all.

Well, thank goodness I came upon this website while I was googling 14,000 HCG and empty sac. It gave me the idea to get a 2nd opinion with a different doctor. I was praying that I would have a story to share and inspire other girls as well.

So, I went in Monday for another blood draw with a new doctor (but one I have seen in the past). My numbers went up to 20,000 but I knew that numbers could still go up even with a BO.

Well, I had my ultrasound with the new doctor this morning and within a second showed me the baby with a strong heartbeat. E> I was in shock as you can imagine. Remember, I was given ZERO hope.

She said my chances of a miscarriage now drop to 5% which is a heck of a lot better than 100% that my other doc gave me.

So, please..............

Always seek a 2nd opinion. Even if it is to confirm what the first doctor said.

Good luck and GOD BLESS!!!!

Kelli

Nicole's story

Postby mnfarrs » Mon Nov 19, 2012 6:46 pm

We found out we were pregnant with our seventh child in October. We were using a diaphragm and were taken by surprise. I get hyperemesis but this time it hit even before I missed my period...hard! I waited until 7 weeks and then saw my midwife. She did the ultrasound and we immediately saw 2 empty sacks and she said sorry but they are blighted ovums and I'll have to get a Dnc or miscarry naturally. She said I should come back in for a check in a week "just to make sure", but that I had a less than 5 percent chance of seeing any thing. I said you mean I was having twins but they just disappeared at some point? She explained what a blighted ovum was and said yes. We left there feeling empty and in shock. I certainly felt pregnant. :*( I went home and searched out everything on the web about it and discovered this web site. I got hopeful but then decided I was just kidding myself. It was a hellish week waiting but today we went in and got an ultrasound and right away there was a sack with a baby inside with its little heart bumping away. E> we tried to explain about tilted uteruses and hiding babies and she just said she guessed it needed time to develop and we just smiled. After getting home we looked at the ultrasound pictures and there is something in the other sack we think so we'll just have to wait and see! 8)O

Bleeding, HCG not doubling, low and empty sac

Postby LittleEmma » Thu Aug 21, 2014 12:26 am

On August 9th, I received a positive home pregnancy test. 5 days later I bled for a few minutes and it stopped. Not enough blood to even soak a light pad. No cramping or pain. Nevertheless, I called my doctor right away and was in the doctor's office 30 minutes later. I was told based on my LMP I was 7 weeks along, however I knew I couldn't have been more than 4 to 5 weeks at best because my cycle has never been normal.

The doctor did an ultrasound and saw an empty sac but mentioned the sac looks low which may be an indication it is on it's way out. A sign of a miscarriage. This is my first so I am taking this as a very bad sign. Bleeding, empty low sac. Anyhow she had me do blood test the next four days. The first 48 hours my HCG level only went up 20% which is alarming because it should've been up at least 60% (ideally doubling). I did another blood test and 48 hours later it was only up 50%. The doctor told me over the phone it's not looking good. She offered no hope at all. She said we will do the ultrasound again and will let me know what my "options" are. I was at work when I received this news. I wanted to break down and cry. My appointment to have a second ultrasound was not until another 2 days but upon hearing the bad news, I asked the doctor to have me come in right away. It was torturous to wait another 48 hours so I wanted to get my final confirmation and know my "options". I just started a new job so the stress of that and the possibility of a miscarriage was too much for me too handle. Every hour waiting felt like an eternity.

I came into the doctor's office and you could tell by the look on her face when she walked in that she thought for sure it would be a miscarriage. In fact, I had no hope either. I figured as a doctor she knows best. She went ahead with the ultrasound. I did not even look at the screen because I felt completely defeated. So I turned my attention to the doctor who now is staring at the screen and saw a look of astonishment across her face. She said, " there is a yolk now and the sac has risen to a normal appropriate area". We both were completely shocked. She measured me at 5 weeks and 2 days not 7 weeks as she had determined 5 days ago.

I wanted to share my story because I want others to know that if your HCG level is not doubling, do not be alarmed. I was left to stressed out for days bc my hcg was not rising the way the doctors thought they should be. I believe doctor shouldn't use HCG level as a determining factor for miscarriage unless the HCG level is dropping. If the HCG level is rising and you are not experiencing heavy painful bleeding then don't stress yourself out for no reason. Everyone's body is different and I don't believe HCG level need to double to have a viable pregnancy.

Of course, my pregnancy is still only 5 weeks old and there is a chance I might have further complication but I just wanted other women to not give up based on HCG counts.
